6. What happened during our first night and how did we make up for the lost time?
Hmm, the story is silent. But, in the morning we were very content, and we were drawing a plan for the
long day that was awaiting us. Whether it was the long day, or the many beers consumed, we don't
remember. The heat and humidity were on par. It was a good thing we stopped every few minutes to take
shelter in the air conditioning, buying another refresher. The first thing we did on this mildly sunny day
was ride the Tuck-Tuck. The local tricycle taxis, the emblem of Bangkok. Some serious haggling and
negotiating began over the price of the ride, which was more than amusing and almost as pointless. We
had learned our lesson and each time we said we knew where we were going, and it was very close. This
saved us a lot of mis-thrown money as the price was negotiable with no clear or even any idea of mileage
in kilometres. The tuk-tuk ride thrilled us so much that we ignored the extremely clean and air-conditioned
taxis with leather interiors. The tuk -tuk drivers seemed to be retired Formula One racers, and the rules
of the road were non-existent to them. They drove at high speed, ungainly manoeuvres and a great show
for us and passers-by. We later read on the internet that accidents with them were frequent and with not
very good endings. However, that didn't stop us for a moment. The attraction and adrenaline rush of the
tuk-tuk was unmatched by any other mode of transport in Thailand.
