33. We spent the next day exploring the smaller temples in Bangkok and the Siam Paragon Mall.
Being our second to last day in Bangkok, we didn't get up as early as usual. By about 10:30 we were at
breakfast, enjoying the wide variety of fruits and dishes. Strange why, amidst so much fruit, which in those
latitudes is interesting even in appearance, let alone in taste, it was I who was looking for my
daily...watermelon. Inexplicable even to myself, because in Bulgaria this fruit in summer is abundant. The
other thing we both ate was bacon and eggs. I got hungry and swallowed even now. We finished our
breakfast and headed off on our outlined plan for the day. After visiting a few temples, I really wanted to
take one of those tuk-tuk excursions for 80 baht that end with a visit and a third last stop at the clothing
store. When I told my wife that they were a bit crazy there and wouldn't let you leave until you bought
something, she somehow didn't quite believe me. Slightly crazy was putting it very mildly, they were
downright threatening and rude. It wasn't too hard to find such a hot offer. It was only 80 baht, as the
three mandatory stops and shops we had to see were paying the tuk tuk driver's fuel to take their tourist
clients. We ticked off the first two shops and ended up at the clothing one. I remember his name very
well, but out of respect for their work, I won't mention it lest I set off future visitors. At its entrance we
were greeted by two young, friendly and very inspired looking guys. We sat down for starters on the first
floor, were bamboozled with the regular numbers of complimentary drinks to choose from, then given a
few catalogues to look through beforehand and form our choices. By this stage, my wife was looking at
me with a smile and when she had decided I had gently teased her, came an even kinder invitation to go
up to the second floor. We sat down, carrying our catalogues, and several people appeared around us,
looking mean. Another gentleman appeared opposite us, greeting us loudly with "Welcome!" and "What
will you buy?" Confidently, but with a bit of trepidation, I shared that we weren't done choosing yet. Then
our friend screamed, looked at us super scowling and yelling at the people around him like it was their
fault for not explaining how amazing their clothes were. My wife was starting to get worried and thought
we were participating in "Candid Camera," but alas, it was her obvious and startling. The shouting
continued and the finger pointing began on the pages of magazines and brochures accompanied by
questions about our choices. Seeing that May was getting more than a little tense, I began to apply my
acting skills in an attempt to fool the frowning audience that surrounded us. I mumbled repeatedly that I
didn't know English and didn't understand at all what they were saying to me and what they wanted from
us, waving my arms and looking astonished. All this cacaphony and bickering went on for a few more
minutes and it got pretty rough when at one point the gentleman's nerves failed him and with another
shout he threw us out of the store. Outside, the tuk-tuk driver was wondering whether he should pick us
up and drive us to the original point from which we started, and that was the arrangement, or whether
he should run away too. Anyway he picked us up and didn't even ask us what was wrong, didn't say a
word on the way and looked at us in the mirror looking pale. We ourselves quickly took it all in with a
smile, but I was more relaxed about proving to my mate that I wasn't lying. A little later we decided to
check out the Siam Paragon mall. There was a quick bite of fruit and coffee and a browse in the shops.
The mall is one of the most popular in Bangkok, very stylish and well laid out. We spent the most time and
attention in the shops, which were selling huge statues that were actually air fresheners. In the fabulous
style of all Thailand, we expected to see ghosts, but there were none. But, at least the fairytale feel was
up to par and we definitely felt relaxed, especially after the dramatic visit to the clothing store.
